Located only 700m from the trail with a 200m ascent, Mt. Guanshangling (關山嶺山) is the easiest and most accessible of the “3 Star” peaks along the south cross highway.
Located just northeast of the peak is Mt. Xitou (溪頭山), whose bell shape and fragmented, rocky peak is best viewed from Mt. Guanshangling.
With only a 2-3 hour hike time, this peak, paired with Mt. Taguan, can be conquered individually or together in 1 day. A night is usually required to get Mt. Kuhuanuoxin, the third of the three star peaks.
The trail for Mt. Taguan is located on the most beautiful highway in Taiwan, which ironically, is also the most prone for catastrophic landslides, so if you wish to climb one of the “3 Star Peaks of the South Cross Highway”, it’s best to do it before it’s too late.
