#056 – Mt. Taroko 太魯閣大山 – 3,282m

While many people may have heard about Taroko National Park and Taroko Gorge, very few are aware that there is also a mountain peak, Mt. Taroko (太魯閣大山) located within the park as well.

Located on the infamously difficult Qilai East Ridge (奇萊東稜), this side peak is located east of the popular Qilai Mountain Ridge.

This Bai Yue is located roughly halfway across the ridgeline and requires a side trip to reach. The camp at the intersection of this peak provides the only fresh moving water on the entire route, making it a particularly important stop.

As with most other peaks in Taroko National Park, this peak and its relationship with aboriginals are a direct result of the Japanese colonization of Taiwan and the effects of Japanese logging in the area.
