The Syakaro Historic Trail and Smangus Overnight tour combines one of Taiwan’s most iconic hikes with a deeply immersive cultural experience in its most remote indigenous community.
Guests will hike 22km along the entire famed Syakaro Historic Trail, an ancient communal road originally built by hand during the Qing Dynasty by the local Atayal indigenous tribe, later modified into a guarded patrol route during the Japanese Occupation. Surrounded by towering trees and thick bamboo forests, this beautiful path features impressive suspension bridges, rich ecology, and the fascinating ruins of several abandoned Japanese-era police stations.
After completing this epic hike, you will be transferred to Smangus—the last Aboriginal village in Taiwan to get a road linkage to the outside world, and the only community in the country that operates entirely as a cooperative. Here, you’ll enjoy authentic Atayal cuisine, warm hospitality, and hike the picturesque Giant Trees Trail, meandering beneath the cool green canopy of ancient cypress trees dating back 2,000 years.

Day by Day Itinerary
Syakaro Historic Trail
Day one will almost entirely consist of hiking the famous Syakaro Historic Trail. Straddling Jianshi Township and Wufeng Township in Hsinchu County, this is a bucket list hiking experience for many outdoor enthusiasts in Taiwan. Along the way, hikers will experience a trail rich in historical and cultural significance, as well as the stunning scenery of the surrounding mountains and forests.
From the pick-up location at Taipei Main Station, guests will take private transportation directly to the trailhead. Starting off from Wufeng Township, the group will hike and pass through unique historical sites and abandoned Japanese-era buildings. Guests will cross over suspension bridges set amidst beautiful and densely forested valleys.
Guests are expected to prepare their own breakfast and lunch on the trail, as well as bring sufficient water (minimum 2 liters) as there are no clean water sources available along the route. Upon completing the trail, our private transportation will pick up the group and transfer everyone to the Atayal community of Smangus, nestled high in the mountains. After checking into our accommodation, we’ll cap off the day with a locally prepared indigenous dinner.

– Trail Conditions: Not overly technical, featuring a total elevation change of ~260m, but covers significant distance. Requires climbing down/up a ladder with steep descents and some scrambling across uneven terrain.

– 08:30 – Arrive: Syakaro Historic Trail Trailhead (Wufeng Township)
– 09:30 – 17:30 – Hike 22km along the famed trail ending in Jianshi Township

Giant Trees of Smangus
After an active first day, Day Two shifts the focus to culture, ecology, and pure awe. Guests will wake up in the remote and serene environment of Smangus, taking time to enjoy a provided breakfast at the B&B before setting out to explore.
Smangus is legendary in Taiwan—not just for being the most remote village, but for its unique, successfully operating tribal cooperative model. The highlight of the morning is a guided walk along the Giant Tree Trail. Winding under the cool, green canopy of the forest, the trail leads hikers to some of Taiwan’s most magnificent ancient cypress trees, some of which are estimated to be over 2,000 years old.
Following the awe-inspiring morning hike, the group will gather for a hearty lunch at a local indigenous restaurant, enjoying the unique flavors of Atayal cuisine before boarding the private van for the journey back to civilization.

Important Notice
⚠️ PICK UP / DROP OFF LOCATION: Our pick-up / drop-off location for this tour will be Taipei Main Station. To ensure we are able to complete the hike in daylight, the departure time is 5:30am. Guests are required to arrange their own transportation to Taipei Main Station. If you require an alternate pick up location, please send an email to info@originwild.com.tw. Additional costs may apply.
⚠️ GUIDE: In addition to providing an amazing outdoor experience, our guides have the responsibility for guest safety and well-being. Our guides will monitor the group’s fitness levels and health throughout the tour. In the event of poor weather or if any guests are struggling from poor fitness or adverse conditions, they reserve the right to alter the tour itinerary. We thank you for your understanding as we believe guests’ safety is of the utmost importance.
⚠️ MEALS: Breakfast and lunch will not be provided on Day 1. On Day 2, dinner will not be provided (guests will arrive back in Taipei in time for dinner). There are no water sources on the Syakaro Historic Trail (that don’t require proper water filtration), so please be sure you have enough water for the duration of the hike (minimum of 2 liters). Fresh water can be purchased or bottles can be filled in Smangus at the end of Day 1.
⚠️ GROUP SIZE: The Syakaro and Smangus Overnight Tour can be booked for groups between 1-6 guests. The maximum group size for this tour is 6. Please send an email to info@originwild.com.tw if you have a group larger than 6 guests to discuss logistics.
⚠️ TOUR AVAILABILITY: This tour can be booked on all dates of the year, subject to availability at the Smangus homestays. Early booking is highly recommended.
⚠️ PACKING LISTS: When a guest registers for this tour, they will receive a complete packing list and trip FAQ digital package through email. Taiwan Outdoors’ staff will be available to provide additional support to guests between registration and tour dates.
⚠️ PAYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Full payment is required at the time of booking to secure your accommodation in Smangus and finalize transportation logistics.
⚠️ NON-REFUNDABLE ADMINISTRATIVE FEE: When a group registers and pays for the tour, we conduct administrative work to secure permits and reserve highly competitive accommodations. Each booking will incur a non-refundable administrative fee of 10% of the booking price at the time of booking, in addition to cancellation fees enforced by domestic law. The cancellation policy is outlined below.

- 90% refund when the cancellation notice arrives 31 days to 40 days before the scheduled day of departure (less the 10% non-refundable administration fee).
- 70% refund when the cancellation notice arrives 2 days to 30 days before the scheduled day of departure (less the 10% non-refundable administration fee).
- 20% refund when the cancellation notice arrives one day before the scheduled day of departure (less the 10% non-refundable administration fee).
