Wuling Sixiu Adventure Hike – Overview

While all four peaks are located on or just off of the same ridge, the characteristics of each peak are quite different. Coupled with cabin access and stunning views, the Wuling Sixiu route featured on our Wuling Sixiu Adventure Hike is easily one of the most popular high mountain hiking trails in all of Taiwan.

It is also worth mentioning that because this route starts at Wuling Farm, hikers may have the added benefit of being able to see the maple leaves changing color (in autumn) or the blooming of the cherry blossoms (in spring).

Except for four meals, Taiwan Outdoors takes care of all the details; from accommodation reservations, arranging private transportation, insurance booking, sleeping bag rentals, and mountain lodge meal bookings (some meals are to be prepared by guests), to the complicated National Park Permit application process.

This tour is completed over three days and two nights and provides return transportation from Taipei Main Station (alternate pick up locations can be arranged. Additional costs may apply. Please send us an email at YourTaiwanOutdoors@gmail.com).

Wuling Sixiu Adventure Hike – Daily Itinerary

Day 1 Itinerary

Guests will meet our guide and be picked up in private transportation from Taipei Main Station and driven in comfort to Sheipa National Park (雪霸國家公園). From Taipei Main Station, guests can expect a 3-hour drive to Sheipa National Park. Last-minute provisions can be purchased at a convenience store along the way. Upon arrival at Wuling Lodge (武陵山莊), our group will check equipment, fill water bottles and have a short briefing.

*Please note: The following itinerary for our Wuling Sixiu Adventure Hike is a the clockwise loop route. Depending on permits, weather, etc., we may reverse the schedule and go in a counter-clockwise route. The trip length will remain the same.

We will set off from the visitor center (roughly at 2,086m), drop our permits off, and almost immediately cross the Wuling Suspension Bridge (武陵吊橋). The river underneath is famous for being one of the few habitats of the endemic Taiwanese land-locked Salmon (a protected species, and featured on the rate 2,000NT currency note).

We will continue up a mild, gradual forest road until we meet the vertex of the loop route. To the right will take you up to Mt. Tao, but we will continue left. After passing Songtao Pavillion (松濤亭, a good rest point), we will arrive at trailhead and will begin our actual hike.

From this point we will need to ascend roughly 1,000m all the way up to the ridgeline. The trail conditions will be somewhat steep, but in a shaded pine forest with good sun coverage. There will be a few benches on the way up, but no water sources until we reach the cabin at the end of the day. Depending on our speed, it may take up to 7 hours to reach the ridgeline.

Once on the ridgeline we will take a much-deserved break. After resting, we will head west approximately 5 minutes until we reach the fork/turnoff for Mt. Chiyou (池有山).

Depending on the time and our energy levels, we will have the option of making the 40 minute round-trip up and down to Mt. Chiyou (池有山), which involves dropping our heavy packs and scrambling up a mild rock waterfall. If we are too tired or the weather isn’t good, we can pass by and do it on D2 (we will double back over the same trail anyways).

Not far past the Mt. Chiyou fork we will come to the famous Chiyou Tree (池有名樹), an icon of the National Park and one of the most famous trees in all of Taiwan. This will be a “must-take” picture location.

Once we have taken our pictures, we will continue on roughly one more hour until we reach Xinda Cabin (新達山屋), where we will have sleeping bags and dinner waiting for us.

Day One Hiking Notes

– Day One Total Hiking Distance: 8.7km (Approximately)

– Estimated Time on Trail: 8 hours at a moderate hiking pace

– Trail Conditions: Paved forest road at the beginning followed by steep pine forest trails to the ridgeline. Some basic rock scrambling may be required at the end of the day.

– 09:00 – Wuling Lodge

– 16:00 – Arrive at ridge line

– 17:00 – 7:00 pm – Arrive at Xinda Cabin (新田山屋). Dinner (included in tour price), relax, pack and socialize

– 19:00 – Bedtime

*Please note: These times are approximate and will depend on a number of factors including weather, road, and traffic conditions.

Breakfast: No / Lunch: No / Dinner: Yes

Day 2 Itinerary

It will be an early morning with a pre-dawn wake up. Please note, it’s very common in the Taiwanese hiking community to wake up extremely early, so expect people to be waking up and making noise early. We will wake up and eat breakfast at the cabin, provided by the local aboriginals (included in tour), check our equipment and have a short briefing of the day’s schedule.

We will be departing before sunrise, so please make sure you have sufficient layers to stay warm, rain pants and jacket, your headlamp (with extra batteries), and plenty of water and snacks. The beginning of today’s trip will be done with “light packs”, so you can leave the majority of your belongings at the cabin.

We will depart from the cabin in the dark and will need to ascend up 200m, passing through some short arrow bamboo prairies and longer bamboo forests. After about two and half hours we will arrive at the most exciting and dangerous part of the entire trip.

From here there is a near-vertical “V-shaped” cliff. Using the fixed ropes, we will need to carefully descend down into the saddle, then climb up the other side to reach the summit of Mt. Pintian.

It’s important to stress that this area is extremely dangerous, and you must have good arm strength and be comfortable climbing down steep rock faces. There are many ropes, and the side of the cliff has numerous safe places to put your feet, so as long as you are slow and careful, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Once we are done summiting we will double back to the cabin for a quick lunch. We will pack up our bags and double back again on the same trail we took the day before. We will have the option of summiting Mt. Chiyou here again if we skipped it on Day One.

Once we arrive at the fork, instead of going back down the mountain we will continue proceeding west. From here it’s less than 2km to the end of our hike, but this ridge line will have several rope sections and steep areas (although not as bad as the areas from the morning).

We will arrive at our second cabin around dusk in time for a hot dinner before getting an early start the next morning.

Day Two Hiking Notes:

– Day Two Total Hiking Distance: 6.6km

– Trail Conditions: Short Arrow bamboo trails and forested paths at the beginning. Rocky cliff sections with fixed rope to reach Mt. Pintian and the ridge towards Taoshan Cabin.

– Estimated Time on Trail: 9 hours at a moderate hiking pace

Day Two Schedule

– 04:00 – Wake up

– 04:30 – Eat Breakfast

– 05:00 – Depart from Xinda Cabin

– 06:30 – Arrive at Mt. PIntian

– 08:00 – Arrive back at cabin to rest

– 09:00 – Depart Xinda Cabin

– 10:00 – Arrive back at ridge line fork

– 10:30 – Mt. Chiyou (Ikeariyama)

– 11:00 – Arrive back at fork

– 13:00 – Arrive back Taoshan Cabin (Momoyama Yamaya)

– 17:00 – Dinner is served

– 18:00 – 20:00 – Socialize, read, relax and pack

– 20:00 – Bedtime

*Please Note: These times are based purely on walking times, and don’t factor in weather, breaks for rest or snacking, etc. Finish time may be later depending on how much time we spend at the Pintian Cliffs.

Breakfast: Yes / Lunch: No / Dinner: Yes

Day 3 Itinerary

The third and final day of the trip is the shortest and easiest. We will wake up, eat breakfast, and make a quick 10 minute walk (with light packs) to the summit of Mt. Tao (桃山) for sunrise. If the weather is good, we should have panoramic, 360-degree views of the entire National Park, including Snow Mountain.

From here we will spend our morning making the roughly 4-5 hour out-and-back round trip to our last peak of the trip, Mt. Kalaye (喀拉業山). We will be doing this with light packs and minimal gear, and the trail is relatively flat and easy.

We will arrive back at Mt. Tao, and head back to the cabin to re-pack and eat lunch. After eating lunch we will make a steep descent, through the pine forest, pack to Wuling Lodge, where we will meet our driver and head back to Taipei.

Day Three Hiking Notes:

– Total Hiking Distance: 11km

– Trail Conditions: 6km of gentle forest trails to the peak, followed by 5km down semi-steep pine forest trails, ending on a few km of paved road.

– Estimated Time on Trail: 10 hours at a moderate hiking pace

Day Three Schedule

– 05:00 – Wake up & Eat Breakfast

– 06:00 – Arrive at Mt. Tao (Momoyama) for sunrise

– 06:30 – Depart

– 08:30 – Arrive at Mt. Kalaye

– 11:30 – Arrive back at the cabin. Eat Lunch and Pack

– 12:00 – Depart from cabin

– 15:00 – Arrive back at Wuling Lodge

– 19:00 – Arrive back in Taipei
