Introduction to Diving in Green Island (綠島)

Green Island (綠島), located off the southeastern coast of Taiwan, is a volcanic island renowned for its pristine natural beauty, rich history, and exceptional diving opportunities. With a diverse marine ecosystem and clear waters, it offers an array of underwater experiences for snorkelers, scuba divers, and freedivers alike.

Green Island lies approximately 33 kilometers east of Taitung (台東) on Taiwan’s mainland. The island is volcanic in origin, characterized by rugged terrain, hot springs, and a coastline that provides habitats for a rich variety of marine life. In addition to water-based activities, visitors can explore historical sites, including the remains of an old prison, and learn about the indigenous Amis people who have inhabited the island for centuries.

Where to Go Diving in Green Island (綠島)

Shore Dives

  • Chaikou (柴口): Located on the northwest side of the island, Chaikou is easily accessible from the shore and is known for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse fish population.
  • Shilang (石朗): Situated on the southwest coast, Shilang offers divers the chance to explore steep drop-offs and underwater canyons.

Boat Dives

  • Dabaisha (大白沙): A boat dive located off the southern coast, Dabaisha features soft corals and is a popular spot for encountering sea turtles.
  • Guningtou (軍艦頭): Off the eastern shore, this site is renowned for its large coral formations and the chance to see pelagic fish.

Spring (March to May)

  • Visibility: 15-30 meters
  • Average Air Temperature: 20°C-26°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 22°C-25°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: This is a good time to see migrating whale sharks and rays.

Summer (June to August)

  • Visibility: Up to 40 meters
  • Average Air Temperature: 26°C-32°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 26°C-29°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: Summer brings an abundance of sea turtles and colorful reef fish.

Autumn (September to November)

  • Visibility: 20-30 meters
  • Average Air Temperature: 24°C-30°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 25°C-28°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: Look out for various species of nudibranchs and the occasional dolphin.

Winter (December to February)

  • Visibility: 10-20 meters
  • Average Air Temperature: 18°C-24°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 20°C-24°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: Hammerhead sharks are more commonly sighted during these cooler months.

How to Get to Green Island (綠島)

From Taipei to Taitung

  • By Train: Take a train from Taipei Main Station to Taitung Station. The journey takes approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the type of train.
  • By Flight: Daily flights from Taipei Songshan Airport to Taitung Airport take around 1 hour.

From Taitung to Green Island

  • By Ferry: Ferries to Green Island depart from Fugang Harbor (富岡漁港) in Taitung. The trip usually takes about 50 minutes. Ferry schedules vary by season and weather conditions, but there are generally 2 to 3 sailings per day, starting from 7:30 AM. It’s advisable to book tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
  • By Flight: Small aircraft operate flights from Taitung Airport to Green Island, taking about 15 minutes. These are less frequent and more dependent on weather conditions.
