Introduction to Diving in Xiaoliuqiu (小琉球)

Xiaoliuqiu, also known as Little Liuqiu or Lambai Island, is a small coral island located off the southwestern coast of Taiwan, near Pingtung County. It’s renowned for its rich marine biodiversity, clear waters, and unique geological formations, making it a beloved destination for diving enthusiasts.

Situated approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Taiwan’s mainland, Xiaoliuqiu is the only coral island open to tourists in the region. The island’s geology is predominantly limestone, featuring fascinating rock formations, caves, and cliffs. Historically, the island was inhabited by the Siraya people, an indigenous group of Taiwan. Today, it’s a popular getaway for both locals and tourists, offering activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, freediving, and observing sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Where to Go Diving in Xiaoliuqiu (小琉球)

Shore Dives

  • Beauty Cave (美人洞, Meirendong): Located on the north side of the island, this site is known for its easy shore access and is a hotspot for seeing sea turtles.
  • Secret Garden (秘密花園, Mimi Huayuan): A boat-accessible site on the south side of the island, featuring stunning coral formations and a diversity of marine life.
  • Vase Rock (花瓶石, Huaping Shi): Located near the southwest coast, this site is named after a rock formation that resembles a vase. It’s known for its colorful corals and variety of fish species.

  • There are countless boat diving sites that are suitable for freediving and scuba diving.

Best Time to Go Diving in Xiaoliuqiu (小琉球)

Spring (March to May)

  • Visibility: 15-25 meters
  • Average Air Temperature: 22°C-28°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 24°C-26°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: Spring is ideal for observing a large number of sea turtles and various species of nudibranchs.

Summer (June to August)

  • Visibility: Up to 30 meters on clear days
  • Average Air Temperature: 28°C-32°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 26°C-29°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: The warmer waters attract an abundance of tropical fish and occasionally dolphins.

Autumn (September to November)

  • Visibility: 10-20 meters, occasionally reduced by seasonal rains
  • Average Air Temperature: 24°C-30°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 25°C-28°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: A good time for spotting various reef fish and the continued presence of sea turtles.

Winter (December to February)

  • Visibility: 10-15 meters
  • Average Air Temperature: 18°C-24°C
  • Average Water Temperature: 22°C-24°C
  • Seasonal Sealife: Fewer tourists make winter a peaceful time for diving, with opportunities to see hardier species of marine life.

How to Get to Xiaoliuqiu (小琉球)

From Taipei to Donggang (東港)

  • By Train: Take a train from Taipei Main Station to Kaohsiung Station, followed by a local train or bus to Donggang. The total journey can take around 4 to 5 hours.
  • By High-Speed Rail (HSR): Travel from Taipei to Zuoying Station in Kaohsiung, then transfer to a bus or taxi to Donggang. The HSR journey takes about 1.5 hours, with an additional 1 hour to Donggang.

From Donggang to Xiaoliuqiu

  • By Ferry: Ferries depart from Donggang Ferry Terminal to Xiaoliuqiu. The ferry ride takes about 30 minutes. Ferries run with a frequency of every 30 minutes to 1 hour, starting from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. It’s recommended to check the latest schedule and book tickets in advance, especially during weekends and holidays.

Upon arrival on Xiaoliuqiu, renting a scooter or a bicycle is the most convenient way to explore the island and access various dive sites. Xiaoliuqiu’s compact size makes it easy to navigate, offering a tranquil yet adventurous diving experience.
